Vermont River Trip

Paddle Through the Heart of Vermont on the Winooski River Sojourn

Montpelier, VT - Friends of the Winooski River is hosting the 4th Annual Winooski River Sojourn June 21-26, 2011. This six-day paddling trip down the Winooski River draws participants from across the Northeast to canoe or kayak through Lake Champlain’s largest tributary watershed. The trip begins in Marshfield, just downstream from the Cabot Headwaters and ends at the mouth of Lake Champlain in Burlington. Each day participants experience new aspects of the river from narrow, winding channels on day one to wide, flat gentle flows on day six, along with breathe taking views.

The Sojourn is a guided river tour led by kayak and canoe instructors as well as an expert Vermont naturalist. Participants will have the opportunity to learn about the birds, mammals, fish and plants of the Winooski as well as the geologic history of the watershed during daily presentations. In addition to natural history, paddlers will also get to experience some of the great food offerings of Central and Northern Vermont including Red Hen Bakery, the Cider House and On the Rise Bakery as well as Cabot Cheese.

At 90 miles in length the Winooski River flows from Cabot to Lake Champlain traversing a wide variety of landscapes including agricultural land, forested areas and some of Vermont’s largest urban centers. It passes through three spectacular gorges including the Middlesex Gorge, the Lime Kiln Gorge and the Essex Dam Gorge - the former and latter are present day hydro power generation sites. The Winooski River Sojourn offers an unparalleled opportunity to explore one of Vermont’s most important rivers.

Participants can choose to paddle for a single day or all six days. Food, camping and transportation are included for multi-day paddlers. Food and morning transportation is included for single day paddlers. Single days start at $55/person except Sunday, which is $30/person. The six day trip is $330/person.

Friends of the Winooski River is a non-profit dedicated to the restoration and protection of the Winooski River and it’s tributaries. We work throughout the 1,080 square mile watershed to protect habitat, stabilize stream banks and improve water quality.
